Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might want to know before reaching out.
What does Ohr Habayit do?
We send volunteers to do small home repairs for Jewish families in Los Angeles going through hard seasons: lights, outlets, faucets, leaks, and the little fixes that pile up. Quietly done, always private.
Who is it for?
Jewish families in the LA area going through a difficult stretch: illness, divorce, loss, money stress. You do not need to belong to a particular shul or community, and how observant you are does not matter. If you are part of the Jewish community and your home needs a hand, we are here.
Is it really free?
Yes. Volunteer labor is free, and basic parts and materials are covered through donations. For bigger jobs beyond what volunteers can handle, our partner contractors offer discounted rates.
What kinds of repairs do you handle?
Light fixtures, bulbs, switches, and outlets. Faucets, drips, and small leaks. Touch-ups, caulking, hardware, and other small fixes around the home. If you are not sure whether your job fits, just ask.
Who will come to my home?
A trusted volunteer or partner contractor from our circle: electricians, plumbers, handymen, painters, and handy neighbors. Everyone understands that discretion is part of the job.
How do I request help?
Fill out the short Request Help form. Someone from our team will call you within 48 hours to coordinate. No long process, no explanations required.
Is my information kept private?
Always. Your information is never shared, your story is never told, and what happens at your home stays between you and us.
How can I volunteer?
Fill out the Partner With Us form and tell us your trade or skill. Jobs get posted as they come in, and you claim the ones that fit your schedule. No minimum commitment.
Where do donations go?
Directly to the work: parts, tools, materials, and bigger needs like heating and cooling that volunteers cannot cover alone. Our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt application is in progress, so our tax-deductible status is currently pending.
